Be Intentional with Every Command
Teaching basic commands to a young pup can be fun and rewarding. However, maintaining those commands through puppy months can often be a task. Sometimes it’s good to just take it slow and be very intentional with those commands until they are mastered. I think one thing that many puppy owners don’t do well is limit the commands to scenarios where there is incentive for pup to obey. Especially when they reach that 3-4 month old range of being mildly mischievous.
For the first couple of months, I’ll only give sit commands when we have limited distractions and I’m holding their food bowl or waiting to let pup out of kennel or through a door, etc. In these scenarios, I have pups full attention and we can have the most meaningful “sit” commands possible.
What I will not do is intentionally put us in scenarios to fail, which typically include significant distractions or a lack of incentive.
When it comes to training young puppies, quality over quantity wins every time.
